We All Need a Comfort Movie Now and Then

November 21, 2023

What movie (or movies) do you watch when you are feeling down or not feeling well?

A little while back, I was lying at home not feeling well at all. I thought it would be a good opportunity to watch something new, but shortly into the movie, I realized I just wanted something familiar, a movie as comfy as the blanket in which I had wrapped myself. I ended up watching The Wizard of Oz and had a very hyggelig evening. Low lights, comfy blanket, warm food, and a favorite movie – the only way my evening could have been improved would have been not being sick.

I think we all have that urge from time to time to rewatch our familiar favorites. Sometimes because we are sick, sometimes because we are sad, and sometimes merely to relive fond memories from the past. Comfort movies can be from any time and any genre as long as you find comfort in it. Generally, we find comfort in things that are familiar, a story where we know all of the jokes, all of the scares, or all of the drama.

Comfort movies also do not have to be objectively “good” movies (here’s looking at you, Batman & Robin). Sometimes a “bad” movie can be so much fun to rewatch (I would recommend Twilight or Killer Klowns From Outer Space)

Most of my favorite comfort can be easily categorized: movies I watched as a kid (Clue, The Princess Bride, Masters of the Universe), movies I enjoyed as a teen (Miss Congeniality, Legally Blonde, A Knight’s Tale), and most any schmaltzy rom-coms (The Proposal, The Holiday, Crazy Rich Asians). I also know many people who love sci-fi and horror as their primary comfort movies. The real ultimate decider in what makes a comfort movie is you.
