I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy is already one of 2022's bestselling biographies, and in truth, I predict it will end up taking the top spot! In her book, McCurdy, star of Nickelodeon’s hit sitcoms iCarly and Sam & Cat, shares her experiences growing up as a former child actor, dealing with debilitating anxiety, and her issues with eating disorders and addiction.
While many young children and teens dream of being famous, McCurdy was pushed into the limelight by her overbearing and manipulative mother, who was determined to make her daughter a star no matter the cost.
“I want to give you the life I never had, Net. I want to give you the life I deserved. The life my parents wouldn’t let me have.”
McCurdy’s thoughts on this are haunting: “There was only one answer.”
But what happens when your abuser finally passes away? Suddenly, without her mother calling all the shots, Jennette was lost.
“My life purpose has always been to make Mom happy, to be who she wants me to be. So, without Mom, who am I supposed to be now?”
I’m Glad My Mom Died is both heartbreaking and at times delightfully humorous. You’ll find yourself quickly emotionally invested in McCurdy’s journey to find her own voice and her own path. This debut work is an excellent read, and I look forward to reading more from her.
