In this three-part workshop, award-winning author and editor Natalie C. Parker will teach young creators how to create dynamic, original stories from the ground up.
Part 2: Word by Word
Parker will lead the class through an examination of the first lines of several young adult novels to demonstrate how individual words work to ground the story in a setting or world, establish character, and create expectations for the reader. Attendees will have the opportunity to submit their own first lines to be workshopped and will leave this session with a nuanced understanding of the capacity for single sentences to create entire worlds. While the focus will be on first lines, the lessons will have an impact beyond them.
Please note that this series of workshops is intended for teen writers, not adult writers of teen or young adult literature. Registration is required and space is limited. Registrants will be enrolled in and expected to attend all three parts. Please note this program will take place both in person in the Story Center historic home and virtually via Zoom.
