What if my school district isn’t included?
MCPL is working with other school districts and hopes to bring more online in the near future. If your school doesn't participate yet, you can still apply for a Library card with all of the same privileges directly from the Library either at one of our locations or online at mymcpl.org/newcard.
How long are Library cards valid?
Student Library cards are valid throughout the school year and are automatically renewed for each school year as long as the agreement with the school district continues and the student is enrolled in a participating district.
How does a student start using their account to access online and physical resources?
Each school system has decided on a special format for Student Library card numbers using a student’s ID number, as well as a format for a PIN that will be needed for an online catalog account. At school, the student’s teacher or media specialist can share that information with a student. Students can also visit their MCPL branch and ask staff for assistance.
- Using online resources: When accessing any online resource on mymcpl.org, type in the student’s Library card number (including the special school district-specific prefix, if assigned). Certain resource providers may ask that the student also create an account directly with them to track progress within that resource.*
- In addition to research resources and homework help, our online resources include digital content that can be downloaded or streamed including eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines, eMovies, and eMusic.
- Checking out physical materials**: Students can search the online catalog and when they find materials (books, DVDs, audiobooks, etc.) that they would like to check out, they may visit any of our locations. To place holds, renew materials, and monitor their account online, they will need to use their Student Library card number and PIN to create their account in the catalog. (Any student under the age of 13 will be guided through creating a catalog account using information other than a Student Library card number and PIN to comply with COPPA regulations.)
*Some examples of resources that require separate accounts to track progress include Live Homework Help from Tutor.com and Mango Languages.
**Students in some school districts are limited to digital resources only (see list of school districts).
What are my Library card number and PIN?
