Red, White, and Blue Patriotic Picks for July

July 4 is recognized as American Independence Day. Both in honor of American history and offering opportunities to delve deeper into the nation’s past, here are a few resources to get you in tune with the American Spirit.

A personal favorite that I will always recommend is Universal Class. You simply create an account, using your email as a login and an original PIN, and you will have access to more than 600 courses on literally every subject. From writing historical fiction novels and cooking classes, to photography and technology, there is literally something for everyone on this resource.

In terms of American history, several of my favorite classes about America’s past include America’s Heroes and Villains, History’s Greatest Conspiracies, Twenty 19th Century Women who changed American History, Haunted Places, Genealogy 101, U.S. Citizenship Test Preparation, and Introduction to Music Appreciation.

Want to learn about the colors of the American flag and their meanings, make Uncle Sam crafts, explore the Wild West, understand elections and voting, and engage in the stories of American all tale legends? I strongly encourage you to check out Scholastic Teachables. There are over 10 pages of crafts, activities, and worksheets you can print out. This is an excellent resource for kids in grades K-6.

Music is arguably the most universally understood medium, and what better place to gain perspective on the influences of American history than through Music. Check out American Music. The site features 7,400 pieces of instrumental and vocal music across 35 genres. These genres include many great singers, songwriters, and groups showcasing Folk songs to Bluegrass, Country to Jazz, and American Indian to Gospel. You will definitely leave with your toes tapping.

Check out Fold3 Library Edition for military records dating back to the American Revolutionary War. You can check out the pictures, stories, and memories of the families and soldiers who fought and lived safeguarding America.
