So, you have tracked your Great Uncle Fred to the Kansas City area in the 1920s, but you have lost him after that. What about Aunt Minerva? She was in Kansas City in 1946, but there is no sign of her otherwise. You want to find out what happened to them, but your research has hit a dead end. What do you do for more information? Where can you go? How about a quick investigation of Genealogy Quick Look?
Genealogy Quick Look provides an index of resources available through the Midwest Genealogy Center (MGC), which includes indexes of obituaries, birth records, marriage records, and other documents compiled by MGC staff and volunteers for more than 20 years.
Also included in this collection of indexes are inactive pension claims from the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board, as well as births, marriages, and deaths in select years for members of the Community of Christ Church. You can search the index by name and/or date. If you locate a resource, you will have the opportunity to request a copy of that resource.
Currently, there are 12 resources in our collection:
- Independence Examiner newspaper: 1900-1959
- Kansas City Star and Kansas City Times newspapers: 1975-2006
- The Call Newspaper: 1988-2001
- Our newspaper collections have an “every name index” listing all names mentioned in a given article.
- Book indexes from some of the books on our shelves
- Jackson, Clay, and Platte Local History Indexes: 1849-1984
- Kansas City Social Registers Blue Books: 1910-1911, 1924-1962
- Most entries include the names of the children of prominent citizens in Kansas City, Missouri, as well as the maiden names of wives.
- Missouri County Patron Directories: 1875-1925
- This collection comes from early county atlas or plat books when “patrons” would pay to have their names listed in the directory or add biographical material to the book.
- AFRA (American Family Records Association) Pedigree Tables
- Charts from former members
- Midwest Genealogy Center Archival Indexes
- Includes indexes for Bible records, cemetery listings, family research, and more
- U.S. Railroad Retirement Board Pension Claims: 1936-2010
- This collection is a searchable index of inactive claim folders of deceased workers whose employers were covered under the Railroad Retirement Act. This does not include streetcar, interurban, or suburban electric railway employees.
- Saints’ Herald: 1860-1968
- Zion’s Ensign Index: 1898-1932
- Both of these collections include indexes of births and blessings, marriages, and obituaries.
In genealogy, we encourage researchers to do an exhaustive search for their ancestor, which means looking at every resource possible for more information. So, to find more information about Great Uncle Frank and Aunt Minerva, take an exhaustive look into Genealogy Quick Look.
