Frequently Asked Questions

Why should my child participate?

Connecting children with the Library is a great habit to start early in life and builds literacy skills. Also, studies show reading combats the “summer slide” that can occur when kids are out of school. And, of course, it’s fun!

What counts toward 20 minutes of reading?

All reading counts! Reading books checked out from the Library or books at home counts. Also, listening to eAudiobooks, reading articles online or in print, following recipes from cookbooks, and reading game directions also count. Plus, because many Library programs include use of early literacy skills, program attendance counts, too!

Will there be programs?

The Library has programs at branches to enrich a child’s summer learning experience, as well as virtual programs on the MCPL360 Facebook page and through Zoom. Visit mymcpl.org/events for a complete list.

When can we start logging?

Logging begins June 1 and ends August 24. You can print a reading log or log your reading online.

What happens if we miss a day or two of reading?

You don’t have to read 20 days in a row. As an example, you could read 12 days straight, skip two days, and then read the next eight days to get to the 20-day level. With 85 days from June 1 to August 24, there are plenty of days to finish the entire challenge!

What is the deadline to pick up prizes?

Prizes must be picked up by September 6.
