Celebrate Women’s History Month

March 11, 2024

March is Women’s History Month—an chance to focus on and celebrate the contributions and achievements of women in America.

This national holiday has its roots in 1978’s “Women’s History Week”, a local celebration in Santa Rose, California that quickly spread to other communities the following year.

The National Women's History Project (later, the National Women's History Alliance) advocated for national recognition and in 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued his first presidential proclamation for National Women’s History Week. (This observance fell the week of March 8 to coincide with International Women’s Day.) Then, in 1987, Congress passed a law designating March as Women’s History Month.

The world has always been filled with incredible women. Discover these voices through books, movies, and music, and don’t forget to check out MCPL’s very own Women’s History Page for even more resources and events to celebrate these fearless, inspiration women!
