Do I need a Mid-Continent Public Library access pass to use MGC’s resources and services?

No, an MCPL access pass is not required to visit the Midwest Genealogy Center or utilize any of our Research Assistance services or resources. Additionally, many of our genealogy classes may be attended virtually via Zoom, no access pass required  However, many of our online databases and other library resources are accessible from home with a library card.

Residents of Clay, Platte, and Jackson County, Missouri, as well as residents of reciprocal counties are eligible to apply online for a card. MGC also offers the option of a Research Card to U.S. residents living outside of the MCPL service area. To learn more, and see if you are eligible, see our FAQs.

Can I research people and places outside of the Midwest at the Midwest Genealogy Center?

We have resources and information for researching all across the United States as well as internationally. Our knowledgeable staff can assist you with whatever research questions you may have.

Does MGC staff provide research assistance? 

Yes, our staff provide research assistance to all visitors – no appointment required. For those new to genealogy, our Get Started page offers a variety of helpful resources and information. Customers can attend any of the dozens of free classes and events, both in-person and virtually via Zoom, offered each month on a range of genealogy topics.

Through our query service, MGC staff may do limited research and lookups, answer your genealogy-related questions, and provide suggestions to break those "brick walls." Customer also have the option of a consult appointment, a free, one-hour appointment with a Reference Associate who provide assistance with a specific research goal.  These requests should be specific and targeted in nature. Are there professional researchers who will do research for me? 

MGC staff are not able to do private research for customers. Visit the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) for a directory of professional genealogists and translators for hire across the world. These researchers are not affiliated with the Midwest Genealogy Center or the Mid-Continent Public Library system.

Can you help me research an adoption and find my living relatives?  What about DNA research?

Yes and no. We can provide general research assistance for anyone researching an adoption or conducting DNA research; however, we cannot locate living friends or relatives for you. Records of living persons are not easily accessible due to privacy laws and MGC staff are not able to view your DNA results. While MGC staff are limited by certain restrictions, we recommend customers visit the directory of professional researchers provided by the Association of Professional Genealogists for further assistance with this type of research.

What is the Memory Lab at MCPL and how do I use it?

The Memory Lab is a do-it-yourself space located at the Midwest Genealogy Center that provides equipment for digitizing materials such as home movies, audio tapes, recipe books, and family photographs. Visit the Memory Lab to learn more and book an appointment today.

Does MGC accept donations? 

MGC accepts donations from the public in the form of books, periodicals, and archival materials. It is recommended that customers call the Midwest Genealogy Center (816.252.7228) to speak with a staff member about your donation prior to bringing the item in.
