Beat the Heat This Summer at the Library

Beat the Heat This Summer at the Library

June 26, 2024

As summer temperatures climb higher, finding ways to stay cool becomes essential. Thankfully, the Library offers a variety of refreshing activities to beat the heat, making it the perfect summer destination for families and individuals alike.

Explore Local Museums with the Museum Pass Program

Escape the sun and dive into history and fun with our Museum Pass program. This initiative provides families with free entry to the Harry S. Truman Library & Museum and the Wonderscope Children’s Museum. It's an excellent opportunity for an educational and entertaining day out of the heat. MCPL cardholders aged 18 and older can check out a pass, with each pass valid for up to four admissions at the Truman Library and up to six admissions at Wonderscope.

Sip and Relax in Our In-Branch Coffee Shops

Nothing beats the heat like a cool, refreshing drink, and our in-branch coffee shops offer the perfect place to enjoy one. Whether you’re reading a book, catching up on your emails, or simply taking a break from the summer sun, these cozy spots provide a welcoming atmosphere:

  • Colbern Road Library Center - Post Coffee
    • Monday - Friday: 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
    • Saturday: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • Woodneath Library Center - Friendly Bean Coffee Company
    • Monday - Friday: 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
    • Saturday: 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

    • Monday - Saturday: 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
    • Sunday: 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Get Creative with Access Art

For those feeling artistic, our Access Art initiative offers both in-person and virtual art instruction classes for adults. This program is a fantastic way to escape the heat while diving into creativity. Whether you’re learning art history or creating your own masterpiece, these classes provide a refreshing and inspiring indoor activity.

Discover Hidden Treasures at Between the Pages

If you prefer to enjoy art rather than create it, visit the Midwest Genealogy Center to view the new gallery exhibition, Between the Pages. This exhibit showcases fascinating archival items found within the pages of MGC’s yearbook collection. It’s a unique and captivating way to stay cool indoors while exploring local history. The exhibition runs from April 22nd to July 19th but be sure to check for any closures due to private events.

Early Literacy Stations

MCPL is committed to promoting early literacy. To support this goal, many Library locations have special children's computers set up in the children's area where kids can play literacy-building games. These interactive stations are a great way for children to learn while having fun in a cool, air-conditioned environment.

The Library is your go-to destination for staying cool and entertained this summer. With activities for all ages, from exploring museums and sipping coffee to engaging in art and discovering hidden treasures, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. So, beat the heat and make the most of your summer at the Library!
