Traditionally set in the American Old West from the end of the Civil War to the late 19th century, Westerns are chock-full of cowboys, Native Americans, ranchers, lawmen and outlaws. At times the historical accuracy is left behind in favor of gun slinging and revenge. However, the genre does include more well researched non-fiction as well as more non-traditional characters and settings – widening the appeal to include audiences that may have not found traditional Westerns to be engaging or relatable. No matter what the setting and time frame, the Western brings to people the allure of the American Old West – adventure, danger, a striking landscape and the opportunity to forge your own path in an untamed land.
