Meet Tiney

If you drive by the Culinary Center (inside the Green Hills Library Center), you might notice a rather large fork sticking up out of the ground outside the front doors.

“Tiney,” as the staff calls the towering fork sculpture, is fabricated from aluminum by local KC business Metal One and is a nod to the culinary focus of the center. Tiney may not be the biggest fork in the state, or even the country, but we estimate that it is in the top 10!

Large forks in the United States (that we are aware of) by size:

  • Creede, Colorado – 40 feet tall
  • Fairview, Oregon – 37 feet tall
  • Springfield, Missouri – 35 feet tall
  • Milan, New York – 24 feet tall
  • Kansas City, Missouri (Tiney) – 20 feet tall!

You might ask, “What does a fork have to do with a library?” Well, a lot! In our Library building, you could:

  • Take a class with the staff from the MCPL Culinary Center, because sometimes you might use a fork for mixing or eating!
  • Find a cookbook in the nonfiction books (call numbers beginning with 640) to peruse while sitting in one of our comfy chairs.
  • Plan a trip to visit all the big forks in this country just by walking down the aisle of adult nonfiction with the call numbers beginning with 910.2.
  • Find a snack in the coffee shop/café that you might just need to eat with a fork.
  • If you have a young one, you could take them to the new play kitchen in our children’s area, where they are sure to find some utensils to cook with in the pretend kitchen.
  • Or you could check out some of Tiney’s favorite titles from the collection (whether or not Tiney has actually read them all, these titles are sure to poke your interest!): Tiney’s Library Favorites.
